The region has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, as testified by implements, made of pyrite, unearthed mostly near lake and river banks. According to mythology, gods, demigods and heroes lived, reigned and clashed in the region.

The residents of the area dynamically influenced all political things of Ancient Greece between 4th and 2nd centuries BC, a period when great cultural and financial development is achieved. Olympia in the prefecture of Ilia, was the center of athletics of the whole then known world. The Etolic Federation, headquartered in Thermo in Etoloacarnania, had a leading role in Ancient Greece for a century, and served as a model of federal state, not only in the ancient world, but even today. The large-scale social and political reformations that occurred in the region at times have filled it with archeological sites and monuments from all eras. Numerous castles, ancient towns &  theaters, stand proud and imposing even today, so densely situated that the visitor will come across the remains of an ancient citadel or a well-preserved castle with only 30 km separating them.
